The company studied, CitiSales, is a Fortune 100 retail company that operates over 6,000 stores throughout the United States. The CitiSales Study is a unique collaboration between private industry and researchers at the University of Kentucky Institute for Workplace Innovation and the Center for Work & Family at Boston College. The Ford Foundation funded the research focused on hourly workers, and the Sloan Center on Aging & Work/Workplace Flexibility at Boston College funded the research focused on older workers. CitiSales provided generous support throughout the project.

The University of Kentucky Institute for Workplace Innovation

The Institute for Workplace Innovation (iWin) conducts research on the complex intersections of the changing workforce, the global economy and organizational effectiveness. We translate academic research into innovative strategies that enable productive work environments, a vibrant economy, and working families to thrive.

The Institute for Workplace Innovation engages Kentucky businesses of all sizes in creating workplace cultures that make them “employers-of-choice” and Kentucky a “state-of–choice” – a place where businesses choose to locate and employees choose to work and to live. The Institute partners with business leaders, economic and workforce development entities, professional associations, chambers of commerce, local and state government, and national organizations to influence private and public policy discussions.

The Center for Work & Family at Boston College

Founded in 1990, the Boston College Center for Work & Family is committed to enhancing the quality of life of today's workforce by providing leadership for the integration of work and life, an essential for individual, organizational, and community success. Our vision is that companies and communities will work together to ensure their mutual prosperity and the well being of employees and their families.

The Center works with leading employers committed to creating workplace cultures that support the “dual agenda” of individual and organizational success. Our corporate partners are human resource directors, many of whom specialize in areas such as Work/Life, Diversity, Human Resource Development, Organization Development, and Employee Health and Well-being. All share a common interest in implementing approaches that help employees find greater balance, increase productivity, and develop both professionally and personally.

The Center on Aging & Work/Workplace Flexibility

Established in 2005, The Center on Aging & Work at Boston College is a research center committed to: developing a research agenda focused on aging and work in the 21st century; engaging the broader business community in the adoption, implementation, and utilization of flexible work options for older workers; impacting public discussion about aging and work; becoming the premier source of quality information about flexible work options for older workers.

The Center focuses on flexible work options because they represent an innovative response to the aging workforce.  Research conducted by the Center examines employers’ adoption of flexible work options, their implementation in the workplace, and their utilization by older workers.

The Center's multi-disciplinary core research team is composed of more than 20 social scientists – economists, sociologists, social workers, and psychologists – who have a strong expertise in the fields of aging and workplace research.
